Just discovered that a £400,000,000 company near King's Lynn only paid £15,000 for their planning application, yet we have to pay £13,000 for a business which will reach somewhere between £500,000 and £1m. Not saying that the large companies should pay more, but the planning system would seem to be a little unfair.

Mark Brown, Norwich City Council Planning Officer, has asked me to make a clarification to the following email. Planning fees don’t bring in as much money for councils as it costs to deal with planning applications, primarily due to the fact that small applications, such as domestic house extensions, are significant loss makers for council planning departments. Larger applications partly subsidise these smaller applications. Also the application process for larger developments is 13 weeks, not 8 weeks, information that I hadn’t found during the planning process. Thank you for those clarifications Mark, very useful to know.

Unfortunately the fees we are having to pay will still be a significant barrier to businesses wishing to enter budget tourism markets. A backpackers hostel has a significantly lower budget to build with than a 5 star hotel, so that needs to somehow be taken into account by the planning system, otherwise Britain will miss out on the budget markets which could be hugely beneficial for the country.

Whether the domestic planning application fees should rise, to cover some of the blackhole of council planning departments, is no doubt a political hot potato and not one that MPs will want to debate. Especially as domestic planning applications are the bulk of planning applications and voters will probably not take kindly to more expensive fees.

That's a real shame to hear, but Namibia is not alone. Our very own neighbours to the north, Papua New Guinea are just the same. They could make millions in tourism showing the world how beautiful the country is. Instead, they congregate in the city slums and steal, plunder and murder each other while the police is looking on and in many cases participates.

As one of the participating artists I just wanted to say how much I am looking forward to the challenge. It will be a brilliant opportunity to show how much scope and possibilities there are to make great art from materials deemed as rubbish. I'm sure it will be a fun day and I'm looking forward to seeing what we all come up with.

Marian Savill
