It’s been a while since I wrote a blog entry and so much has happened since my last posting.
Who would have thought that two months on from the disappointment of the NO vote in the referendum, that it could seem such a world away with yet another political scandal. How do our politicians manage to get themselves into these messes? By now surely they can see trouble looming way before it hits, but no, they still act like rabbits in the headlights of a giant truck.
Clearly both our politicians and our senior policemen are unable to tell what inappropriate behaviour is. A one to one meeting with a member of the press is probably inappropriate, but a private dinner at the cost of the press behind closed doors is as seedy as it seems. We’ve lost some police already and at least they have finally taken responsibility for their behaviour, but I doubt any of our politicians will take such an honourable route.
As we learn more about the number of meetings The Chancellor and other members of the government have had with News International, and the history of Blair and Brown’s licking of News International’s shoes and body parts, it’s clear that exactly what we thought was happening was actually happening – one Australian man has held both the Tory and Labour gonads in his hands and was happy to squeeze whenever he liked.
It would be great, as a result of the phone hacking scandal, if our politicians could finally reform politics, but pigs most definitely have more chance of flying. That brings us back to the missed opportunity of the referendum in May, so despite there being lots in the news in the last two months, nothing much has changed – Our politicians are still either inept or corrupt and quite possibly in some cases both.
It’s hard to feel sorry for the staff of the News of the World who’ve lost their jobs, just people in the wrong place at the wrong time, as the Murdocks try to protect themselves from the phone hacking scandal. You wonder how many layers of staff and organisation the Murdocks will cut in an attempt to avoid taking responsibility for the actions that most people believe they not only knew about, but probably endorsed and quite possible implemented.
Ho hum, the vicious cycle of our broken political system!
