Good god the Education Secretary is in a little world of his own! Michael Gove seems to genuinely believe his own rhetoric, but he’s totally disconnected from the real world. I’ve written before and I’ll no doubt write again, that he just doesn’t get it.
With his ill thought out new English Baccalaureate, he’s wiped out the positive impact so many students have on their school in subjects that are less mainstream.
For years schools have been judged on the number of students who get 5 GSCEs including English and Maths. This meant that the two core subjects that everyone needs in any job are effectively compulsory for all students, then they can follow their own path with the rest of their exams. If you are good at Art then take and Art related GSCE, maybe Music is your thing or even the more traditional academic subject of History.
Now you’ll be judged only on subjects that form part of the English Baccalaureate, which leaves out many of the subjects that really bring diversity to a school, especially Art and Music. However you can take Hebrew, which is surely less important to the mix of a school than true Art GCSEs?
Will no one in the Coalition stop this idiot?
